Afghanistan World Cup 2019 Squad: Afghanistan has announced their 15-member squad for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 on Monday, 22nd April. The inclusion of Hamid Hassan in the squad was the main highlight of the selection.
Gulbadin Naib will lead the team in the world cup. Asghar Afghan, who was axed from the captaincy couple of weeks before, has also been included in the Afganistan’s world cup squad. Hamid Hassan, who played his last ODI in 2016 has made a remarkable return in the Afghanistani squad. However, his selection is subject to fitness and performance in the practice matches.
“It has been a six-month preparation process for the ICC Cricket World Cup. The mission is to play inspirational cricket in the tournament; I know there are strong teams but we will do our level best to achieve our goals,” said Ahmadzai. “There were some challenges that we needed to handle. We selected the best squad considering factors such as experience, fitness, team balance, current form, and conditions.”
Along with this squad, selectors also named three players Ikram Alikhil, Karim Janat, and Sayed Shirzad as the reserved players for the World Cup.
“Luckily for us, the come-back of senior Fast bowler Hamid Hassan is good news. However, we will take into account his form and fitness during upcoming practice matches“, Ahmadzai added, on the inclusion of Hamid Hassan.
Afghanistan has included Noor Ali Zadran and Hazratullah Zazai as the other opening batsman along with Mohammad Shahzad, who is confirmed to be one of the openers.
Furthermore, in the spin bowling department, selectors decided to go with their regular spinners Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
